Turkey orders detention of 62 including military, police officers, over Gülen links

Turkish prosecutors on Monday and Tuesday ordered the detention of 62 people, including military members and police officers, as part of a massive post-coup crackdown targeting the faith-based Gülen movement.

The Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office on Tuesday issued detention warrants for 15 military members over Gülen links and 16 teachers who had worked at Gülen-linked schools.

The state-run Anadolu news agency reported that 10 of the suspects from the military were on active duty and that the remainder had been suspended due to administrative investigations.

The İzmir Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office ordered the detention of 20 people, including police officers, over Gülen links.

Police detained 18 of the suspects, 14 of whom were former police officers, according to Anadolu.

The Konya Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office on Monday ordered the detention of 11 noncommissioned officers on suspicion of Gülen links.

The Turkish Defense Ministry on Tuesday announced that more than 16,000 military members have been dismissed due to alleged ties to the Gülen movement.

Meanwhile an İstanbul court on Tuesday arrested 137 soldiers who had been detained on April 26 after the issuance of detention warrants for 210 military members based on alleged affiliation with the movement.

Ankara accuses the movement of orchestrating the 2016 coup attempt, although it strongly denies any involvement.

Over half a million people have been subjected to prosecution for alleged membership in the movement.
