A Turkish woman whose story inspired a blockbuster movie in 2015 has developed serious health problems during her 31 months in prison and solitary confinement, the tr724 news website reported on Thursday.

According to the report Karyağdı has developed advanced-stage vertigo and hypertension.

Sevgi Karyağdı was an educator who went to Kyrgyzstan in the 1990s to teach at a school affiliated with the faith-based Gülen movement.

During her time in Kyrgyzstan she witnessed a sequence of events that connected the lives of Turkish and Kyrgyz individuals who were separated during World War II.

The movie, “Selam: Bahara Yolculuk” (Peace: A Travel to Spring), attracted more 1.5 million people to the theaters at the time of its release.

Turkey launched a crackdown targeting followers of the Gülen movement after a failed coup in 2016, accusing the movement of orchestrating the abortive putsch, although it denies any involvement.

Since then, over half a million people have been the subject of prosecution on allegations of membership in the movement.
