Sevgi Karyağdı was an educator who went to Kyrgyzstan in the 1990s to teach at a school affiliated with the faith-based Gülen movement.
During her time in Kyrgyzstan she witnessed a sequence of events that connected the lives of Turkish and Kyrgyz individuals who were separated during World War II.
The movie, “Selam: Bahara Yolculuk” (Peace: A Travel to Spring), attracted more 1.5 million people to the theaters at the time of its release.
Turkey launched a crackdown targeting followers of the Gülen movement after a failed coup in 2016, accusing the movement of orchestrating the abortive putsch, although it denies any involvement.
Since then, over half a million people have been the subject of prosecution on allegations of membership in the movement.
