Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) has revealed that the country saw 210 major earthquakes between the years 1900 and 2017 in which 86,802 people died, the state-run Anadolu news agency reported on Saturday.
In a report titled “Disaster Management in Turkey and Natural Disaster-Related Statistics,” AFAD provided figures on natural disasters that occurred over the last century.
The report said that on average Turkey is hit by a major earthquake leading to loss of life and property every five years.
At least 210 earthquakes with a magnitude of over 6.0 took place between 1900 and 2017, leading to the death of 86,802 people and heavily damaging 597,865 houses.
Most recently, a 7.0 magnitude earthquake hit the eastern province of Van in 2011, in which 644 people died.
The report also included statistics on landslides, falling rocks, floods and avalanches. It noted a visible decline in the number of avalanches since 2012.
