Opposition candidate demands mandate for İstanbul

In Ankara, mayor-elect Ekrem İmamoğlu met with İYİ (Good) Party leader Meral Akşener who supported his İstanbul mayoral bid.

Turkey’s main opposition candidate in İstanbul called on the Supreme Election Board (YSK) on Wednesday to mandate him as the elected mayor, after the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) objected to results that saw him earn a narrow victory over his rival, Reuters reported.

Speaking to reporters in İstanbul after the YSK ruled in favor of recounting votes in eight districts of the country’s largest city, Ekrem İmamoğlu said that while there could be minor errors in vote counts, the outcome will not change.

Since the election of Recep Tayyip Erdoğan for İstanbul mayor in 1994, Turkey’s business capital would see the first left-wing mayor in office.
