Turkey detains 52 Syrians over ISIL links

Turkish police have detained 52 Syrian nationals over their suspected links to the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), The Associated Press reported, citing the state-run Anadolu news agency.

The suspects were detained on Thursday in the town of Osmangazi in northwestern Bursa province.

The private Demirören news agency said police conducted simultaneous dawn raids on five locations to apprehend them.

Turkey was hit by a series of attacks in 2015 and 2016 that were blamed on ISIL and Kurdish militants of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) and claimed the lives of some 300 people.

ISIL claimed responsibility for a gunman’s attack at an Istanbul nightclub during New Year’s celebrations in the early hours of 2017. The attack killed 39 people, most of them foreigners.
