Turkey detains 97 people as part of post-coup crackdown targeting Gülen members

Turkish police on Tuesday detained 97 people as part of a post-coup crackdown targeting followers of the faith-based Gülen movement, the state-run Anadolu news agency reported.

Ankara accuses the movement of orchestrating a 2016 coup attempt, although it strongly denies any involvement.

The Turkish government has dismissed 140,000 public servants and nearly 6,500 military staff members since the abortive putsch. Over 600,000 people were investigated on suspicion of terrorism.

The Konya Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office on Tuesday ordered the detention of 50 people over alleged Gülen links.

At least 16 of the suspects were detained during police operations conducted in 28 provinces.

The prosecutor’s office accused the suspects of infiltrating the Turkish army on behalf of the Gülen network.

Police in Bursa province also on Tuesday detained 38 people as part of two different investigations into the Gülen movement.

Twenty-six of the detainees were reportedly military members, while three of them were previously dismissed from the Turkish army.

The İzmir Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office issued detention warrants for 12 military members and 11 others over Gülen links.

According to the Anadolu report, police raided houses in 10 provinces and detained at least 14 of the suspects.

In Kocaeli province, the police detained 19 soldiers and four others as part of an investigation into the Gülen network.

Three soldiers and three others were also detained in Zonguldak province over Gülen links.
