Only 27 percent of the Turkish public expressed trust in the media last year, a 3 percent drop from 2017, according to the Edelman Trust Barometer survey, the Diken news website reported.

The lowest trust in the media in 2018 was observed in Russia with 26 percent, 21 percent below the average. China has the most public trust in the media with 76 percent.

According to the survey trust in the media has been increasing globally.

However, the media remained the least-trusted institution in 2018 among NGOs, government and business.

Trust in the government in Turkey increased by 1 percent to 52 percent, while trust in business stood at 69 percent and trust in NGOs fell to 57 percent.

In 2018, trust in the European Union among Turks grew by 7 percent to 40 percent, whereas trust in United Nations rose to 41 percent.

According to a Reuters Institute report in November, 49 percent of Turks think they are exposed to fake news, with Turkey heading a list of countries whose citizens claim they were exposed to completely made-up news the previous week.
