A survey conducted by Turkey’s main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) for local elections in March indicates that political parties have retained the support they garnered in the June 24 elections, the Diken news website reported.
According to the CHP poll the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) would win 42.2 percent of the vote in March, while the CHP would have 23.3 percent, the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) 12.4 percent and the İYİ (Good) Party 9.3 percent.
The CHP was at 25.1 percent in the party’s previous survey.
The study also indicates that 54 percent of voters make their decisions based on party politics, while 31.8 percent cast their ballots based on candidates.
A total of 23.1 percent of respondents think that if the CHP comes to power it will restrict religious freedom, while 57.4 percent think otherwise.
AKP leader and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on Monday met with MHP Chairman Devlet Bahçeli for a possible alliance in the local elections.
Bahçeli said they have no problem with Parliament Speaker Binali Yıldırım’s candidacy for İstanbul mayor, a gesture showing his willing to cooperate.
