As the Russian-backed Syrian government prepares to launch an offensive on rebel-held Idlib, Free Syrian Army (FSA) general Ahmad Rahhal announced on his Twitter account that in the event of an attack Turkey would not withdraw from its observation posts in the area and would provide weapons and ammunition to rebel groups, the Cumhuriyet newspaper reported on Sunday.

The announcement came at a critical juncture since it is only a matter of time for the Syrian army and its allies to unleash their offensive on Idlib, Cumhuriyet said.

On Friday Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan had a trilateral meeting with his Iranian and Russian counterparts in Tehran to discuss the issue of Idlib, during which Erdoğan opposed any attack on the rebel-held town as it would lead to a humanitarian disaster and new waves of refugees towards Turkey.

Turkey’s stance on Idlib is supported by several members of the UN Security Council, mostly European states.
