SP names chairman Karamollaoğlu as its presidential candidate

SP leader Temel Karamollaoğlu and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan

The Felicity Party (SP) announced on Tuesday that the party’s chairman, Temel Karamollaoğlu, will be its presidential candidate in the presidential election on June 24.

Turkey will hold snap presidential and general elections on June 24, a year and a half earlier than originally scheduled.

Karamollaoğlu was elected as SP chairman on Oct. 30, 2016.

The ruling Justice and Development’s Party’s (AKP) presidential candidate is the incumbent President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. The İYİ Party has recently named the party’s chairwoman Meral Akşener to represent it in the election, while the pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) is most likely to nominate Selahattin Demirtaş, the party’s former co-chairperson who is currently in jail, as its presidential candidate.

The CHP has not yet announced who the party’s candidate will be.

Speaking at a news conference in Ankara after the announcement of his presidential bid, Karamollaoğlu said if his party comes to power in the June 24 elections, his first job will be to eliminate an ongoing state of emergency in the country, which was declared in the aftermath of a failed coup attempt on July 15, 2016.
