İYİ Party leader receptive to proposal for ‘alliance of principles’ in elections

Meral Akşener

Leader of the newly founded İYİ Party Meral Akşener has given a green light to a proposal for an “alliance of principles” with the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) and the Felicity Party (SP) in the general and presidential elections of 2019.

CHP leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu recently said his party could make “an alliance of principles” with the İYİ Party and the SP.

Akşener said on Wednesday that the alliance of principles is actually a proposal floated by SP leader Temel Karamollaoğlu, adding: “It is of course not possible for us to say, ‘no’ to this. Certainly, yes. But this does not mean an [election] alliance.”

Kılıçdaroğlu also said in a statement earlier this week that his party was warm to the idea of an “alliance of principles” with the İYİ Party and the SP.

“First, the principles are determined, and an alliance is made based on those principles,” he said.

The ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) has already made an election alliance with the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) for the 2019 general and presidential elections.

The MHP will not field a presidential candidate but will instead support Erdoğan’s candidacy.
