Pro-Kurdish DIHA reporter gets 8 years, 9 months on terrorism charges

Nedim Türfent

Nedim Türfent, a reporter for the now defunct pro-Kurdish Dicle News Agency (DIHA), was sentenced to eight years, nine months in prison on Friday.

The sentence was handed down on accusations of membership in a terrorist organization. Türfent has been in pretrial detention since May 2016.

Prior to his arrest, Türfent had covered rights violations that occurred during government-imposed curfews in Yüksekova, a district in the eastern province of Hakkari.

During his first trial, 13 out of 24 witnesses had said they had been tortured to give false testimony.

The curfews were imposed due to clashes between the military and the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).

DIHA is among 184 news outlets the government closed in the aftermath of a July 15, 2016 coup attempt. (Turkey Purge)
