One man was taken into custody in Adana province on Monday as part of detentions in Turkey targeting people who wear T-shirts bearing the word “hero,” the Cumhuriyet daily reported.
The man, who was drinking fruit juice with his friends at a buffet when he was detained, said he did not know what the word meant.
On July 23, four young men were detained in Adana province for wearing hero T-shirts.
Three young men had been detained in Antalya and Çanakkale provinces on July 22 for wearing T-shirts upon which were printed the word “hero.”
Ç.G. (22) and E.E. (22), two students at Akdeniz University, were detained after police in Antalya were informed that they were wearing hero T-shirts. The police apprehended the two by tracking them on the city’s surveillance camera system. The students said they did not know wearing the T-shirt was prohibited.
In Çanakkale police detained B.K. (17) after receiving a tip that he was wearing a hero T-shirt. Police seized the T-shirt after giving him another one to wear.
Two factory workers in Sakarya province were detained while a hotel worker in Antalya was arrested by a court on charges of spreading the propaganda of a terrorist organization after co-workers reported them to the police for wearing T-shirts emblazoned with the word “hero” on Friday.
On July 17, Emirhan B., who was detained when he was attending a coup trial at Ankara’s Sincan Courthouse in one of the T-shirts on Monday, was subsequently arrested by a court. Emirhan B. said he was not aware of the meaning of the word “hero” on the T-shirt that he bought from a shop.
On July 19 Turkish police detained four people wearing similar T-shirts in Eskişehir, Aydın and Elazığ provinces.
Two university students were detained on July 18 for wearing hero T-shirts in Erzurum province’s Yakutiye district. In their testimonies, the students reportedly said they bought the T-shirts from a store in the city and that they had not heard anything about Güçlü.
The hero T-shirts became an issue when Gökhan Güçlü, one of the suspects on trial for an assassination attempt against President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on the night of a coup attempt last year, was thrown out of the courtroom on July 13 for wearing a similar T-shirt.
According to the private İhlas news agency, the textile firm that manufactures the hero T-shirts stopped production after discussions with the police. The T-shirts were withdrawn from sale in stores and online, İhlas said.
