Erdoğan discusses Gulf crisis with France’s Macron and Qatari emir

Turkish President Tayyip Erdoğan (R), French President Emmanuel Macron (C) and Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani

Turkish President Tayyip Erdoğan on Saturday took part in a teleconference call with French President Emmanuel Macron and Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani to discuss a crisis in the Gulf that erupted on June 5 after several countries in the region severed ties with Doha over its support for terrorist groups.

According to a report by the state-run Anadolu news agency, the three leaders said a resolution could be achieved through dialogue rather than sanctions.

The three also updated each other on contacts they had had as part of efforts to resolve the row between Qatar and fellow Arab Gulf states.

A diplomatic crisis erupted between Qatar and other Gulf countries on June 5 after Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain severed relations with Doha claiming Qatar embraces multiple terrorist and sectarian groups aimed at disrupting stability in the region, including the Muslim Brotherhood, the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) and al-Qaeda, and constantly promotes the messages and schemes of these groups through their media.
