40 consecutive life sentences sought for Reina attacker

Reina gunman Abdulkadir Masharipov

An indictment drafted by the İstanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office seeks 40 aggravated life sentences and an additional jail sentence of up to 2,397 years for the prime suspect in a Jan. 1 massacre at the Reina nightclub in İstanbul that claimed the lives of 39 people.

The attacker, Abdulkadir Masharipov, an Uzbek citizen, was apprehended in a joint operation carried out by the İstanbul police and Turkey’s National Intelligence Organization (MİT) in İstanbul’s Esenyurt district in January.

Fifty-seven suspects are named in the indictment, 51 of whom are currently in jail. Masharipov’s wife, Zarina Nurullayeva, is also among the suspects and faces 40 aggravated life sentences and a jail term of up to 2,003 years on murder charges.

The other suspects face jail terms from seven-and-a-half to 15 years on charges of attempting to destroy the constitutional order and membership in an armed terror organization.

The terrorist Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) claimed responsibility for the attack.
