THY begins implementing cabin electronics ban

Turkey’s national carrier, Turkish Airlines (THY), on Saturday began implementing regulations prohibiting passengers from carrying electronic devices larger than cell phones aboard the plane.

On Saturday, US and British bans on laptops and tablets in carry-on luggage on some flights from the Middle East and North Africa came into force.

The ban requires that personal devices larger than a mobile phone — such as tablets, laptops and cameras — be placed in checked baggage for US and Britain-bound flights.
The US restrictions apply to flights originating from 10 airports in countries including Turkey, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, while the British restrictions do not include the UAE or Qatar but do affect Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt, Tunisia and Saudi Arabia.

At İstanbul Atatürk Airport on Saturday THY personnel took passengers’ electronic devices such as tablets and laptops at the boarding gate and stored them in special containers. The measure led to uneasiness among some passengers.
