Women held a rally on İstanbul’s famous İstiklal Avenue on Wednesday night to celebrate International Women’s Day.

Women, mostly from feminist organizations across Turkey, carried banners saying “Stonger together” in a country where women often become victims of domestic violence.

Earlier on Wednesday, female students celebrating International Women’s Day at İstanbul Bilgi University were attacked by a mob that illegally entered the university campus.

According to a statement from Bilgi University, a group of 15 to 20 people jumped over the gate and attacked the students while chanting “Allahu Akbar” (God is great).

A number of female students and security personnel were beaten by the mob, and one student was admitted to a hospital as a result of injuries sustained.

Police detained six attackers involved in the incident.
