Germany says 136 Turks with diplomatic passports applied for asylum

German Interior Ministry has announced that 136 Turkish citizens who have diplomatic passports have applied for asylum in Germany since a failed coup attempt in Turkey on July 15, according to BBC Turkish service.

The ministry’s announcement came in response to a question from a member of the German Parliament.

The ministry said the 136 asylum applications include the families of the diplomatic passport holders.

Turkey is putting pressure on Germany to not grant asylum to these people, citing national security concerns. However, German authorities have said the asylum applications of the Turks will be processed in the normal way.
