One Turkish soldier was killed and two others were injured in a mortar attack perpetrated by Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) militants in Syria’s al-Bab region, according to a statement from the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) on Sunday.

The TSK statement said the injured soldiers were hospitalized in the southeastern provinces of Gaziantep and Kilis while the body of the slain soldier was sent to the Gaziantep Council of Forensic Medicine for an autopsy.

As part of Operation Euphrates Shield, Turkey sent tanks across the border to help Syrian rebels drive ISIL from the border city of Jarabulus in late August, in a dramatic escalation of its involvement in the Syrian civil war.

The number of Turkish soldiers killed during Operation Euphrates Shield has risen to 52 with the latest loss.
