Human rights groups demand İştar Gözaydın’s release

Professor İştar Gözaydın

Turkish human rights organizations have condemned the arrest of Professor İştar Gözaydın on charges of alleged links to the Gülen movement and are demanding her release.

In a statement on Wednesday the Human Rights Association (İHD), Human Rights Agenda Association (İHGD), Association of Human Rights and Solidarity with Oppressed Peoples (MAZLUMDER), Human Rights Foundation of Turkey (TİHV), Amnesty International Turkey branch and the Helsinki Citizens Assembly (hYd), which was founded by Gözaydın, said she is under arrest without solid evidence and on the grounds of some false denunciations.

Underlining that Turkey is going through a process under a state of emergency which was declared following a failed coup on July 15, the statement noted it should not lead to completely renouncing fundamental rights and freedoms.

“Depriving a person of their rights without any solid evidence and [arresting people] on grounds of false denunciations are unacceptable. The decision to arrest Gözaydın should be reversed immediately,” the statement said.
