Police detain co-mayor of eastern Ağrı province

Turkish police on Thursday detained the pro-Kurdish Democratic Regions Party (DBP) co-mayor of eastern Ağrı province, Mukaddes Kubilay.

As part of police operations in İzmir and Ağrı, Kubilay was detained at her daughter’s house in İzmir while her house in Ağrı was searched by police.

Many people including some provincial and district executives from the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) were also taken into custody on Thursday.

Turkey has stepped up its crackdown on Kurdish politicians in recent months. Trustees have been appointed to dozens of municipalities in the country’s predominantly Kurdish Southeast, while Turkish courts in November arrested 10 HDP deputies including the party’s co-chairs.
