CHP claims gov’t’s draft constitution copy of Syrian charter

CHP deputy Mahmut Tanal

Several Republican People’s Party (CHP) deputies have claimed that a draft constitution prepared by the Justice and Development Party (AKP) is very similar to the Syrian constitution.

The AKP and the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) have agreed on draft Constitution that introduces an executive presidency in Turkey.

On Thursday CHP Eskişehir deputy Cemal Okan displayeda comparison between the government’s draft text and the Syrian constitution during a session in Parliament.

Okan said the draft constitution gives the president the authority to issue decrees that have the force of law.

“This draft text is not peculiar to the AKP. Which country’s constitution is this? This is the constitution of the dictator [Syrian President Bashar] al-Assad,” Okan said.

The same claim was also raised by CHP deputy Mahmut Tanal.

“This draft text is not [a domestic product]. The constitution of Syria has been translated; it is an imported constitution,” Tanal said.
