The Turkish military issued a statement on Monday reporting that a fighter jet had crashed near Diyarbakır during a training mission.

No casualties were reported as the pilot ejected safely from the plane and the jet crashed in an empty area.

Deputy Prime Minister Numan Kurtulmuş said at a press briefing that the first findings point to a technical problem with the F-16 jet.

The F-16 crash caused panic among locals who thought it could be a terrorist attack amid a rash of explosions in Turkey throughout the year.

The Turkish military has been conducting an operation against the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) and Islamist State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) in northern Syria.
