HDP Co-chair Demirtaş suffers coronary artery spasm in prison

Co-chairperson of the pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) Selahattin Demirtaş, who was jailed last month, has suffered a coronary artery spasm in prison, a party official said on Monday.

HDP spokesperson Ayhan Bilgen told reporters following a Central Executive Board (MYK) meeting that Demirtaş had a coronary artery spasm on Saturday in Edirne Prison, where he is incarcerated.

“We have concerns related to the health situation of our co-chair. We will apply to the Doctors’ Union to request Demirtaş’s examination in an appropriate hospital and under the supervision of independent doctors,” said Bilgen.

He also noted that although Demirtaş suffered another coronary artery spasm earlier and had a medical report showing this, he has been deprived of the necessary medical services.

Demirtaş along with the HDP’s other co-chairperson, Figen Yüksekdağ, and eight other deputies were arrested last month on the grounds that they refused to testify in court as part of a terrorism probe.
