CHP calls on gov’t to take measures against terrorism, not to just condemn it

Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu

The main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) has called on the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) government to take the necessary measures to prevent terrorism and not just condemn terror attacks after they take place.

The party convened for an extraordinary Central Executive Board (MYK) meeting on Monday in the aftermath of twin bomb attacks in İstanbul on Saturday night that claimed the lives of 44 people and injured more than 160 others.

The Kurdistan Freedom Hawks (TAK), an offshoot of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), on Sunday claimed responsibility for the twin bombings outside Vodafone Arena in the Beşiktaş district of İstanbul.

Releasing a statement following the MYK meeting, the CHP said the AKP government should engage in some self-criticism and put an end to its shortcomings in administration that allow terror organizations to carry out such attacks.

The party said it is the duty of the government to protect the nation from terror attacks and to fight a war against terrorism.

“We regret to say that more than 360 of our citizens have been killed and more than 1,800 others have been injured in 17 major attacks in the country over the past year, caused by weakness in the administration [of the country],” the party said in its statement, adding that it is ready to provide any and all support to the government in the fight against terrorism.
