A strong blast that rocked the southeastern Turkish city of Gaziantep late on Friday might have been caused by a sonic boom as Turkish jets carry out airstrikes near the Syrian border as part of Operation Euphrates Shield, the governor’s office said.
In a statement late on Friday, the Gaziantep Governor’s Office said there were no casualties reported due to the incident.
“However, the noise of the blast might have been caused by a sonic boom as Turkish jets carry out airstrikes near the Syrian border as part of Operations Euphrates Shield,” the statement said.
As the noise of the blast was heard across the city of Gaziantep and neighboring districts, police and firefighting teams were dispatched to investigate.
No further details were available, and the cause of the blast had not been definitively ascertained.
Fatma Şahin, the mayor of Gaziantep, said from her Twitter account that there are no details about the blast and suggested people wait until an official statement is released.
