Former AKP deputy arrested over alleged Gülen links

Hasan Hami Yıldırım

Former ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) deputy Hasan Hami Yıldırım was arrested in Turkey on Friday.

Yıldırım, who was elected deputy from Burdur province in 2011, was arrested on charges of alleged membership in an “armed terrorist organization.” The government argues that the Gülen movement is a terrorist organization and holds it responsible for a coup attempt on July 15. Over 37,000 people have been arrested in a purge that was launched immediately after July 15.

Yıldırım surrendered himself in Burdur following the issuance of a warrant for his detention. He had resigned from the AKP in the wake of massive corruption investigations that came to public notice Dec. 17-25, 2013.
