Austria votes to restrict weapons sales to Turkey

Austria’s National Council unanimously voted on Thursday in favor of a motion restricting arms sales to Turkey.

All six parties in the lower house of parliament backed the motion, which urged the government to take into account the “threat of armed conflict” as well as the human rights situation in Turkey when considering approval of such exports.

According to Austrian media reports, the motion called for a ban on all military and dual-use items, meaning products including chemicals and technology that may have both civilian and military uses.

The motion also noted that the Turkish administration under the leadership of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan suppresses journalists and opposition politicians as well as the Kurdish population in Turkey.

The applicants are thus convinced that under these circumstances no deliveries of war materials, defense goods or dual-use goods for military or police purposes to Turkey may take place from Austria,” the motion stated.
