Turkish gov’t dismisses 242 more academics, bringing total to 6,579

With new state of emergency decrees issued on Tuesday, the Turkish government has dismissed 242 more academics from their jobs, bringing the total number of academics fired in the aftermath of a coup attempt on July 15 to 6,579.

According to the two new decrees, numbered 677 and 678, a total of 242 academics from 21 universities and 942 administrative personnel from 89 universities have been dismissed from their positions.

The number of academics let go from 21 universities is:

Afyon Kocatepe University (14), Akdeniz University (9), Aksaray University (3), Amasya University (1), Bülent Ecevit University (5), Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University (59), Dicle University (7), Gazi University (35), Gebze Teknik University (5), Hitit University (7), İzmir Katip Çelebi University (20), Karamanoğlu Mehmetbey University (1), Kastamonu University (1), Kocaeli University (2), Mustafa Kemal University (5), Muş Alparslan University (1), Ondokuz Mayıs University (52), Osmaniye Korkut Ata University (5), Recep Tayyip Erdoğan University (2), Sakarya University (3) and Yıldız Technical University (5).

A total of 147 academics were dismissed by the military regime after the 1960 coup. Similarly, 120 academics were fired following the 1980 coup.
