A police officer died from gunshot wounds sustained during protests in Adana province on Sunday that were sparked by the arrest of pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) deputies, the state-run Anadolu news agency reported.
The police officer, who was wounded by gunfire during clashes between the protestors and riot police in the Yüreğir district of Adana, died in the hospital.
Turkish police have detained around 100 people in İstanbul and Adana provinces who have taken to the streets in protest of the arrest of the HDP deputies.
Turkish courts on Friday arrested nine HDP deputies including the party’s co-chairs, who were detained in the early hours of Friday following police raids on their homes.
HDP Co-chairs Selahattin Demirtaş and Figen Yüksekdağ and deputies İdris Baluken, Leyla Birlik, Nursel Aydoğan, Selma Irmak, Ferhat Encü and Gülser Yıldırım were arrested on Friday afternoon.
The HDP deputies were arrested after they refused to testify about alleged crimes linked to “terrorist propaganda.”
