Trustee appointed to Kurdish municipality of Şırnak

The Ministry of Interior Affairs appointed a trustee to the Şırnak Municipality on Saturday after the removal of the elected mayor on allegations of terrorism.

Mayor Serhan Kadırhan had been recently removed as a result of a terrorism investigation and was replaced on Saturday by Şırnak’s deputy governor, Turan Bedirhanoğlu.

The appointment was made possible by one of the decrees that was issued following a failed coup in Turkey on July 15.

In September, with the authority vested by the state by emergency rule, the Turkish government removed 28 mayors in the predominantly in Kurdish regions of the country, replacing them with trustees.

Last week, the co-mayors of Diyarbakır, Gültan Kışanak and Fırat Anlı, were arrested due to alleged assistance to the terrorist Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).
