Erdoğan’s speech to nation displayed on giant shopping mall screen

A live broadcast on a pro-government TV station showing Turkish President Tayyip Erdoğan addressing the nation was displayed on a giant screen on the exterior wall of a shopping mall in İstanbul.

A video recorded by a driver traveling on İstanbul’s busy D100 national highway went viral on Friday.

Erdoğan was heard talking about government activities when he was prime minister before his election as president in 2014.

Erdoğan is pushing for a shift from a parliamentary system of governance to an executive presidential system.

Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım said on Oct. 23 that the door for a switch to a presidential system was opened on July 15, when a bloody coup attempt took place.

Government officials said earlier that they are planning to bring a constitutional amendment for an executive presidency to Parliament in January and to hold a referendum in April.

The post of the president is largely ceremonial in Turkey; however, President Erdoğan has been acting as an executive president since his election to the top state post in August 2014. Erdoğan is a strong supporter of a switch to a presidential system. Yet, critics say Erdoğan wants a “Turkish style” executive presidency without checks and balances, one that is aimed at creating one-man rule.
