Emre Soncan, a former Zaman reporter in Ankara who was arrested in government operations targeting critical journalists following a failed coup attempt in Turkey on July 15, said in a letter from Silivri Prison that he has never lost hope for good days in the future, despite the fact that he has been in jail for the last three months.
In a letter shared by his family from his personal Twitter account to all those who support dissenting journalists like himself, Soncan said that whenever he looks up at the clouds, he dreams of freedom.
Soncan, who has been behind bars since July 26 and suffers from kidney disease, wrote the following letter:
“Hello from Silivri Prison,
“I have always believed that ideas are bulletproof and continue to believe that. I enjoy the confidence of being against violence and terror, of standing with universal and democratic values and also of carrying out my profession with honor for the last 12 years.
“We have a small garden here [in Silivri Prison] and a bit of sky. Whenever I look up at the clouds, I dream of freedom. My fervent wish is a country where fellow citizens live freely and equally.
“I have been in prison for the last three months, but my hope has never dimmed because I know that the most beautiful days are those you never lived.
“By the way.. My health and that of my other colleagues is fine. I will see you one day.
