CHP deputy Tezcan suffers gunshot wound in Aydın restaurant

CHP Deputy Chairman Bülent Tezcan rests at an Aydın hospital after an attack by a gunman at a local restaurant.

Deputy Chairman of the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) Bülent Tezcan on Saturday evening was shot in the foot at a restaurant in the Aegean city of Aydın.

Tezcan was taken to Aydın Adnan Menderes University Hospital for emergency treatment. “He is not in critical condition,” CHP group deputy chairman Özgür Özel told HaberTürk TV.

“The assailant fired one shot and fled, chanting a slogan,” said Barkan Kalınomuz, CHP Aydın branch head.

The assailant, who was claimed to be reacting to the CHP’s position against the pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP), was detained by police, the Cumhuriyet daily reported.

But Aydın Governor Ömer Faruk Koçak told NTV that police had identified the assailant and were trying to apprehend him. He also added that there was another person with the assailant.

The attack came two months after CHP leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu’s convoy was attacked by Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) terrorists, on Aug. 25 in Artvin province. A member of the Turkish security forces was killed in the attack.

A group of people from the İstanbul branch of the Grey Wolves (Ülkü Ocakları), a nationalist youth movement affiliated with the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), on Oct. 22 stoned a building in İstanbul’s Bağcılar district where CHP İstanbul deputy Eren Erdem was attending a panel discussion.
