6 including suspected Yenibosna bomber arrested in Aksaray

İstanbul police have arrested six people including the suspected perpetrator of a motorcycle bomb attack in İstanbul’s Yenibosna neighborhood on Thursday that wounded 10 people.

The attacker is believed to be a member of the terrorist Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK). The police were able to identify the suspected attacker by examining security camera footage in the area where the attack took place. The police located the owner of the motorcycle used in the attack, who claimed he lent his motorcycle to the suspected attacker, whose identity was not revealed.

The suspected attacker was arrested in Aksaray province as he was travelling to the country’s Southeast in a private car with other people. The suspected bomber was found to be carrying a fake ID and a gun.

He, along with other passengers in the car, were taken to Aksaray State Hospital for a medical examination after their arrest.

A violent explosion caused by a motorcycle loaded with explosives took place near a police station in the Yenibosna neighborhood in the afternoon hours of Thursday, injuring 10 people.

One of the injured was in critical condition, according a statement from İstanbul Governor Vasip Şahin.

A number of ambulances were dispatched to the scene. Video footage showed the windows in the vicinity were shattered and that there was dust everywhere.

Witnesses said they heard gunshots after the explosion.

The same police station was the target of another attack in 2012 by a left-wing terror organization, the Revolutionary People’s Liberation Party-Front (DHKP-C).
