Russian President Vladimir Putin will pay a visit to Turkey to meet with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and to speak at the World Energy Congress in İstanbul, said Russian presidential aide Yury Ushakov, Sputnik reported on Tuesday.

Kremlin Press Spokesman Dmitri Peskov had previously said the Russian president might visit Turkey in October.

Putin’s last visit to Turkey was in 2015 to attend the G20 summit in Antalya.

Diplomatic relations were severely strained after Turkey shot down a Russian warplane on Nov. 24, 2015, plunging the ties to their lowest level in decades.

Earlier this summer the two sides agreed to repair relations. Putin and Erdoğan met in St. Petersburg on Aug. 16, the first time the two had gotten together since the jet crisis.

Erdoğan and Putin had a phone conversation on Aug. 26, discussing bilateral relations and Syria.

As a sign of a thaw in the strained relations, the first Russian chartered aircraft carrying tourists to Turkey landed in the Mediterranean resort of Antalya on Sept.  2.

The two leaders met on Sept. 3 during the G20 summit in Hangzhou, China.

The meeting was followed by the visit of Russian Chief of General Staff Gen. Valery Gerasimov to Ankara on Sept. 15.
