Car bomb in Van injures at least 48 people

One of the largest provinces in eastern Turkey, Van was struck by a terrorist attack Monday morning as the nation observes the religious festival of Eid al-Adha.

According to reports, the car bomb inured at least 48 people including two police officers. The police chief of the province, Suat Ekici, said the car bomb exploded near the governing Justice and Development Party (AKP) regional building, which is only 200 meters from the governor’s office.

Doğan news agency reporter Feyat Erdemir told CNN Türk after the explosion that although he saw many injured people, it was not possible to immediately determine the number of casualties.

As a measure that has become a routine after each terrorist attack, a gag order was issued on reporting the incident shortly after news of it broke.

Yesterday the government removed 28 elected mayors predominantly from Kurdish-populated southeastern and eastern Turkey, where Van is also located. The Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) threatened to “eliminate’ the trustees who replaced the elected Kurdish mayors.”
