2 detained at İstanbul airport on suspicion of ISIS affiliation

Counter-terrorism police have detained two individuals, who traveled from Ukraine, at the İstanbul Atatürk Airport on Sunday night on suspicion of having links to the terrorist Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), after security measures were stepped up following last Tuesday’s suicide attack that claimed 45 lives at the airport.

Police conducted search on the two suspects and background check was carried out. The pair have been identified as 25-year-old K.V., who has both Russia and Kyrgyzstan passports, and 35-year-old F.M.İ., who has a Kyrgyzstan passport and residence permit in Ukraine.

The search in their suitcases turned up four thermal imaging binoculars, three camouflage uniforms, two passports belonging to other individuals, three Kyrgyzstan IDs and five birth certificates.

The suspects were taken to the Counter-terrorism Unit at the İstanbul Police Station on the Vatan Street, following medical examination. The pair are currently being interrogated.
