The Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) has launched a series of airstrikes over northern Iraq, targeting the terrorist Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) bases early in the morning, according to a statement issued by the Turkish military on Thursday.
The airstrikes aimed at the Metina camp used by the PKK between 3:15 am and 4:20 am, based on an instant intelligence obtained by Turkey at early hours.
The TSK statement reported that one Doshka (a Soviet heavy machine gun) position and shelter, three sheltering areas and terrorist groups were destroyed in the operation. The war planes later safely returned to Turkish soil, the statement noted.
The PKK is designated as a “terrorist organization” by the United States (US) and the European Union (EU), as well as Turkey. The 32-year-old conflict, which has claimed more than 40,000 lives, halted in March 2013 as part of the settlement process initiated between the PKK and the Turkish government. However, the PKK ended the ceasefire in the summer of 2015.
