One soldier killed, 12 security force members injured in PKK attacks in SE

A soldier was killed and a total of 12 security force members were injured in attacks by the terrorist Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in southeastern Turkey on Wednesday.

A bomb attack in Nusaybin district of Mardin, which has been under curfew since March 14, killed one soldier and injured 2 police officers and 9 soldiers. The injured were taken to Nusaybin State Hospital for treatment.

On the same day, a soldier was injured in clashes in the Pülümür district of southeastern Tunceli province, after terrorists from the PKK opened fire on Turkish security forces around 4 p.m.

Gendarmerie special operations unit were dispatched to the area and took the injured soldier to Erzincan Military Hospital with a helicopter for treatment.

There have been repeated clashes between security forces and PKK members since a cease-fire between the government and the PKK’s jailed leader, Abdullah Öcalan, collapsed in July of last year. Since the settlement process launched by the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) government in 2012 with the PKK to end the country’s long-standing Kurdish problem ended in July, nearly 200,000 locals in the Southeast have been forced to leave their homes due to fighting and curfews.

The authorities have been imposing curfews in towns and districts to flush PKK militants from urban areas in Turkey’s mostly Kurdish Southeast since the collapse of a peace process with the PKK in July.
