Turkish military strikes back at ISIL after rocket attacks from Syria

The Turkish military hit targets held by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) in northern Syria after rockets fired from across the border struck border province of Kilis for two consecutive days.

Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu said on Tuesday that the military responded to attacks on Kilis, which left one dead and injured dozens of others.

“Yesterday and today, rockets belonging to Daesh terrorist organization landed inside Kilis, wounding 21 citizens,” Davutoğlu said in the speech to his ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) in parliament. “Our armed forces, within rules of engagement, responded immediately and hit Daesh targets,” he said, using an Arabic acronym for ISIL.

One of those injured in the attacks died later in the day.
Located across ISIL-held areas, Kilis is home to an estimated 110,000 Syrian refugees and is frequently targeted by artillery from across the border.

On Monday, five rockets hit the Atatürk neighborhood of Kilis, injuring 12 people who were immediately hospitalized.

Also early on Tuesday, three more rockets hit the province, injuring six people, three of them are reportedly in critical condition. One of those injured on Monday died on Tuesday.
